What’s in a Name?
Hyacinthus Jewelry is named after the Greek mythical character of Hyacinthus (Hyakinthos).
According to the mythology, Hyacinthus was a prince of Sparta, and a youth of extraordinary beauty. When he caught the eye of Apollo, god of prophecy and music, the two became companions and lovers. While the exact details of how it occurred varies between mythic sources, the myth of Hyacinthus concludes with Apollo accidentally causing the death of his lover during a game of discus. Following Hyacinthus’ death, the blood that had been spilled in his demise sprouted into Hyacinth* Flowers.
*Or Larkspur flowers, depending on the interpretation.
This beautiful, yet tragic, story of queer love and transformation has been the inspiration for many beautiful works of art; and continues to do so as the namesake of Hyacinthus Jewelry.
Designs for the Divine
The jewelry we make is inspired by, and created in honor of, divinity - but not just the divinity found in myth and legend.
When some people hear “divinity” or “the divine” - they imagine unfathomable power, immeasurable strength, and unquantifiable knowledge. Images of those who control the cosmic order and hold the world in the palm of their hand; but divinity is not synonymous with omnipotence.
At Hyacinthus Jewelry, we honor the divinity that can be found in the mundane. The unfathomable power of one’s own voice, the immeasurable strength of a community, the unquantifiable knowledge passed through the generations. From the small power of a hummingbird’s wings, to the awe inspiring beauty of a mountain range; and from the gentle kindness of a stranger, to the strength found in a survivors courage.
We acknowledge this often forgotten truth, and hope that our products can awaken, acknowledge, and affirm the divinity that can be found within each and every one of us.
